Is there an optimum or recommended junction temperature for EPC2045?
Regarding junction temperature for EPC2045: It is supported to run this FET’s junction temperature between -40 C to +150 C. Most designs don’t go over 125 deg. C, in order to give thermal margin (it is sometimes difficult to measure exact junction temp., and other conditions may vary).
Some additional considerations for “optimum temperature”:
• Efficiency: Rds,on goes up as temperature goes up. Similar to silicon MOSFETs. Therefore, best efficiency is likely at lower temperatures. See Fig. 9 on page 3 of the EPC2045 data sheet.
• System Cost: this is a trade-off between cost of heat sinking and efficiency. It could be that the lowest system cost lets the EPC2045 go up to 125 C or higher, at the expense of efficiency. On the other hand, best efficiency with coolest junction may cost more for heat sink and thermal solution.
